Recorded in a remote cabin on the Devon coast, STILL OUT is an album-length collaboration between musician-filmmakers – and childhood friends – Will Cookson and Tom Haverly and film maker Rufus Exton released on Stroud based label Sound Records. A reflection on friendship, landscape and the passing of time, it inspired a road trip from North Yorkshire to North Devon they took together in the summer of 2024, and forms the soundtrack to a film of the same name which had its premiere screening as part of Stroud Film Festival in March 2025.

Like the film, STILL OUT is also an oblique homage to The KLF’s iconic 1990 album Chill Out, which the Gloucestershire-based pair revisited after it turned up unexpectedly a few years back in Tom’s dad’s record collection. Inspired to create their own recording using a similarly free-spirited process, Will and Tom relocated to the Devon coast in late summer 2023, splicing together a 40-minute mix from their personal archive of recordings and found sounds in a remote cabin with no electricity or mobile reception.

Using ‘ambient’ as a starting-point rather than an end in itself, they took inspiration from across the musical spectrum – classic-period Brian Eno, Philip Glass, Bill Evans, plus outliers such as 80s singer-songwriter Virginia Astley and the late DJ-producer Andrew Weatherall. The connections, though, are anything but obvious as the audio shifts seamlessly from field recordings and spoken-word interludes to mood pieces and snatches of vintage pop.

For Hidden Notes 2025 KiF Productions will be curating a Still Out Room at the Shambles opposite the main stage in St Laurence Church over the weekend. A sanctuary space if you will, with a pop-up bar, sofas, DJ sets and screenings of the Still Out film.

But he also has a long and occasionally illustrious history as an ambient/experimental DJ, with mind-bending radio shows on NTS, Worldwide FM, Solid Steel and latterly ROVR, and a late night cosmic tea tent residency at We Out Here festival.

MATT SEWELL
SAT 20.09.25 / 21:30 - 22:30
Visual artist/ illustrator & author Matt Sewell is the spotter and jotter of birds for his range of best selling books as well as the deep cuts compiler of his series of lush vinyl only compilations A Crushing Glow. After years of music explorations on the side in his studio Matt teamed up with fellow astral-traveller Chris Tate to form the balearic dancefloor friendly cosmic folk group Sewell & The Gong. Their new album Patron Saint Of Elsewhere on DSSPPR is a sonic journey into a whirling world of wild woods, dancing in mud, late night pastoral adventure and some sort of 21st century hedonism connected to ancient rituals that mark the passing of seasons.

XANTHE FULLER
SAT 20.09.25 / 19:30 - 20:30
Xanthe is a long time music lover and maker of mixtapes. Her clubbing days started in jungle raves and hip hop nights around London until music became her career. For a while she was a radio producer for BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6Music and these days she’s Senior Director of the Creator team at Mixcloud. Until recently she hosted a monthly radio show on Soho Radio playing more genres than should be squeezed into a 2 hour set including anything from disco, to balearic to dub.

MATT SEFTON

Matthew D Sefton is an artist, educator, and part-time DJ, regularly found playing around Stroud alongside Tom at Loose Joints, Darius at Crooked Stylus, or popping up at Holy Water. Beyond the DJ booth, he’s quietly built a vast and esoteric record collection, packed with off-kilter, full of less dancefloor orientated (non) bangers. His vinyl addiction has been in full flow for over 30 years and any opportunity to mine the collections' stranger corners are incredibly appealing.

ROSCO

Rosco AKA Ross Lilly was once a quarter of the now-shelved, Stroud-based collective Disco Sucks, known for bringing the party to London and touring the country with their sound system for many years. These days, he prefers a more laid-back approach. After taking a few years off—even from playing records at home—he’s thankfully relapsed, much to the delight of record dealers across Europe. Now, Ross plays extended sets at his monthly residencies at SVA and Holy Water, drawing from the full depth of his collection. Think ambient floaters, funky folk yacht rockers, Balearic treasures, italo boogie and dreamy electronics. He'll be closing the Still Out room on Sunday night at Hidden Notes with something suitably horizontal.
