EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE:
Prior to the Spindle Ensemble’s concert this Sunday at Hidden Notes vol.1 we are pleased to premiere the neo-impressionist chamber quartet’s brand new videos for Chase and Okemah Sundown from their forthcoming second album.
Following the release of their debut album BEA in 2018 the group began recording their second album at churches in Bristol using the specialised location recording studio setup of their composer/pianist/producer Daniel Inzani
After a concert at St George’s Bristol back in April, the Spindle Ensemble were independently approached by cinematographer/director Fred Reed and animator/visual artist Marie Lechevallier about the possibility of a collaboration. This has resulted in the double A-side single release of Chase and Okemah Sundown, both with a stunning new music video…
CHASE
Music video by Fred Reed, filmed at Bath Spa University film studio.
Fred Reed is a cinematographer and director, who now teaches practical filmmaking skills at Bath Spa University. Before joining Bath Spa he was a freelance Director of photography, starting out as a camera assistant on stop-frame commercials and features with Aardman Animations, then progressing to DoP. Along the way he started filming live action music videos and received an MTV nomination for Cinematography for 'There There' by Radiohead.
Chase is a playful, fast tempo, rhythmical piece which shows off the virtuosic ability of the ensemble. It starts with a chase like sequence which splits and echoes the composition between the instruments, before breaking down to a dreamy sequence of strings which rises to a grand finale reprise of the opening sequence played in unison by the full ensemble. The piece features the accomplished marimba playing of Harriet Riley and is reminiscent of composers Moondog and Steve Reich.
OKEMAH SUNDOWN
Stop frame animated music video by Marie Lechevallier
Marie is a stop-motion animator based in Bristol, currently animating at Aardman studio. She is part of the new puppet animation studio ‘Hangar’, where she created a variety of stop frame animations to use in live visual performances with Spindle Ensemble. The Okemah Sundown music video is a combination of these creations in response to the music.
Okemah Sundown is the first release by Spindle Ensemble featuring an extended line up, predominately consisting of musicians from Bristol’s experimental music collective Bloom. Featuring guest electric guitarist Conrad Singh (Cloudshoes, Tezeta, Evil Usses, Yama Warashi, Alabaster dePlume) accompanied by a small orchestral ensemble. The composition gives a strong nod to the classic spaghetti western pieces of Ennio Morricone and soundtrack scores of John Barry.
