MADGA DROZD
19.09.26
Night is about to fall, the day slowly fades away, and it is this twilight time that Magda Drozd’s latest album inhabits. Divided by Dusk, the Polish composer’s third solo album, carries the promise of a crepuscular otherworldliness. Inspired by Drozd’s stays in Japan, its rich tradition in ambient and experimental music and a collaboration with Japanese flautist Rai Tateishi, as well as a renewed engagement with her roots in Poland and its folk and ancient history, her work is a form of sonic excavation. Layers of dark-ambient tones intertwine with field recordings, textured violin, and luminous folk motifs, invoking long-gone, unspecified rituals.
The album freely interprets traditional folklore, unleashing the ghosts of past cultures we inherit through music passed down to us. Paired with experimental ambient sonic textures, the album carries a magnificent, wandering, melancholic air. The compositions take on an incantatory dimension, welcoming us into a liminal world—one filled with buried treasures.
Magda Drozd, born in Warsaw, is a composer, violinist, and sound artist living in Zürich and London. She has been releasing her music on the Swiss label Präsens Editionen since 2019 and further releases have followed on Hallow Ground for their compilation 'Epiphanies', on Flaming Pines for the concept album 'Cassette Album' by Salomé Voegelin, and on her own label Rivercore, a platform for experimental music.
Together with Nicola Genovese, she founded the duo Sopraterra, who released the LP 'Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow' on Präsens Editionen and La Becque Editions in 2025.
Previous coverage and airplay have come from The Wire, The Quietus, BBC Radio 6 Music, NTS Radio, Spex, self-titled Magazine, Fact Mag, Ransom Note and Boomkat and she has toured with her projects across Switzerland, Europe, Asia and South Africa.

In a world that buckles and cracks under our calamitous weight, something at once old and beautiful, bitter and malign, stirs just a shade below what can be seen. It had dreamt of the end of things, and tasted there sweet hopelessness, but now a whiff of our new and certain fate has pervaded its slumber.
So keenly it ponders, un-lidding an eye. And within each potent coil wicked desires fester, many and urgent. And so it untangles, and organises, and lurches upwards like some sick, bloated whale, rotten and desperate to breathe.
Emily and Joe have both caught glimpses of that which lurks beneath. As each has struggled to make sense of what they have seen, they have been dragged inexorably into a frightening new reality; a shadow world of lurid horrors, raw and obscene, where nothing is as it ought to be. Yet they have witnessed great beauty too, a joy stark and profound, and an addiction is growing. We must search for Emily and Joe before it is too late. We need your help.
- A mind-bending mix of folk horror narratives and acid house beats - join iO Pan on this kaleidoscopic trip into the unseen…
