‘Skin and Stone’ - A retrospective of work by Stroud-based sculptor and tattoo artist Kim Francis, spanning around fifteen years of work with skin and stone. Prints and drawings of her tattoo projects will accompany a variety of stone sculptures varying in size and material.
After training as a jeweller at Central Saint Martins, Kim Francis discovered a love of sculpture, working in bronze casting foundries in the UK and USA. Her early exploration of carving, materials ranging wood and snow, led to find her chosen medium: Stone. loved for its ancient, noble and dependable qualities as a carving material. Kilkenny Limestone, Spanish and Italian Alabaster, Irish and Italian Marble Marble, and Welsh limestone pebbles
Her sculpture shows a devotion to form, and sensuality, inspired by the innate elegance of the natural world. Her pieces, long for and actively invite touch.
So too her work with skin. Her early interest in body adornment became a fascination with the art of traditional (handpoked) tattooing, through which she allows the forms of the body to animate and inform the lines and adornments of the tattoo.
